お寺のお参りの仕方 How to visit a Buddhist temple (in contrast to a Shinto shrine):

  1. 山門 (さんもん) に入る前に一礼 (いちれい) する – bow one time at the main gate
  2. 手水舎 (てみずや) で手や口を清める (きよめる) – ritual cleansing of hands and mouth
  3. 香炉 (こうろ) に線香 (せんこう) を立てる – place an incense stick in the burning place
  4. 本尊 (ほんぞん) の前で一礼し、賽銭 (さいせん) を入れる – bow before the temples “main object” (statue etc.) and make a money offering
  5. 鈴 (すず) を鳴らし (ならし)、本尊に向かって合掌 (がっしょう)する – ring the bell, face the idol again and press your hands together in prayer
  6. もう一度、本尊に一礼する – bow again
